Electronic Notifications

How government electronic notifications work and what happens if you don't read them in time.

Electronic Notifications

Since 2015, the government can notify you electronically. But there are important differences depending on your situation.

Who Is Required to Receive Electronic Notifications?

Required (Law 39/2015, art. 14.2):

  • Legal entities (companies, associations)
  • Licensed professionals (lawyers, doctors, architects)
  • Public employees
  • Entity representatives

Not required (but can opt in voluntarily):

  • Individual citizens (natural persons)

How Do They Work?

  1. The government deposits the notification in your Authorized Electronic Address (DEH)
  2. You receive an email alert (but the alert is NOT the notification)
  3. You have 10 calendar days to access the content
  4. If you don't access within 10 days: you are considered notified (with all consequences)

Consequences of Not Reading on Time

  • Deadlines to appeal start counting from day 10
  • You can lose rights if you don't act within the deadline
  • "I didn't see the email alert" is not a valid excuse

How to Access

  • Citizen folder (sede.administracion.gob.es)
  • My portal of each body (AEAT, Social Security)
  • You need Cl@ve, digital certificate, or DNIe

Practical Tip

Check your citizen folder at least once a week if you're self-employed or have frequent dealings with the government.
