# LexNET 2026: The Definitive Guide for Lawyers

LexNET is the electronic communication system of Spain's General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) for the electronic filing of briefs and receipt of judicial notifications. Mandatory for lawyers, court agents and labour advisors since 2016, it remains the platform with the most friction in the Spanish legal ecosystem. This guide covers everything you need to know to work with LexNET without issues in 2026.

What is LexNET and what is it used for?

LexNET (Electronic Access to Courts Act) allows:

  • Filing procedural briefs to courts and tribunals
  • Receiving judicial notifications with full legal effect
  • Consulting the status of proceedings (in courts that support it)
  • Electronically signing documents with validity before courts

Its use is mandatory for lawyers and court agents in all jurisdictions (civil, criminal, administrative, labour) with few exceptions.

Accessing LexNET in 2026

There are three access methods:

1. Digital certificate (FNMT or equivalent)

The most widely used method. Requires a valid digital certificate from FNMT or another accredited entity, a compatible browser, and no Java (not used since 2017 migration).

2. Cl@ve PIN / Cl@ve Permanente

Alternative without physical certificate. Cl@ve Permanente is recommended for frequent use.

3. Access through the Bar Association

Many bar associations offer their own gateway with certificate management. Check your local bar association portal.

Filing briefs step by step

  1. Access LexNET and identify yourself with certificate or Cl@ve
  2. Select the judicial body (by code or name)
  3. Choose the type of brief (claim, reply, appeal, etc.)
  4. Attach the main brief in PDF/A (ISO 19005-1) + documents in order
  5. Sign electronically (the platform guides you)
  6. Confirm submission → you receive the acknowledgement with timestamp

Filing deadline: Filings before 15:00 on the last day are considered filed that day. Between 15:00 and 24:00, they are considered filed on the next working day (Arts. 135.5 and 43 LEC).

Electronic notifications

Notifications in LexNET take effect from the moment you access them or after 3 working days from their availability (Art. 162 LEC), whichever comes first. This is critical for procedural deadlines.

Common errors and solutions

"Certificate not recognised": Renew certificate or use Cl@ve as alternative.

"File does not comply with PDF/A format": In Word: Save As → PDF → Options → "Conform to ISO 19005-1 (PDF/A)". Or use Lexiel, which exports directly to PDF/A.

"Timeout / Session has expired": Sessions expire after 30 minutes of inactivity. Draft briefs outside LexNET before attaching.

"Brief exceeds maximum size": The limit is 20 MB per submission. Compress PDFs or split into multiple briefs.
