What is the contributory retirement pensión?

The contributory retirement pensión is the financial benefit from the Social Security system received by workers when they cease their activity due to age, provided they meet the required contribution periods. In 2026, the average retirement pensión in Spain exceeds €1,400/month.

Access requirements in 2026

Ordinary retirement age

  • 65 years old with at least 38 years and 6 months of contributions.
  • 66 years and 6 months with fewer than 38 years and 6 months of contributions.

The retirement age will gradually rise to 67 years in 2027.

Minimum contribution period

  • 15 years of effective contributions, of which at least 2 years must fall within the 15 years before the triggering date.

How the regulatory base is calculated

The regulatory base is the average of the last 300 months (25 years) of contribution bases, adjusted for CPI (all months except the last 24). Contribution gaps are filled with minimum bases.

Percentage applied to the regulatory base

Years contributedPercentage
15 years50%
Each additional year (16–20)+3%
Each additional year (21–35)+1.95%
Each additional year (36–37)+2.80%
≥37 years 3 months100%

To reach 100% of the regulatory base in 2026, you need 37 years and 3 months of contributions.

Practical calculation example

Scenario: María, 66 years old, 35 years of contributions. Calculated regulatory base: €2,200/month.

  • Percentage at 35 years: 50% + (20 × 1.95%) = 89%
  • Monthly gross pensión: €2,200 × 89% = €1,958/month

Lexiel provides a retirement pensión simulator that calculates the real regulatory base, applies 2026 coefficients, detects gaps and shows a comparison between ordinary, early and delayed retirement scenarios.
